My name is Maegan and I’m a breast cancer survivor. I’m also a wife, a dog mom, a social worker, a wine lover, a traveler, and a crime junkie. I live in Texas with my husband (Nick, AKA Husbae) and our dogs, Wedge Antilles and Dexter Jansen.
I was diagnosed in 2016, at 26 years old, a just few weeks before my wedding with Triple Negative Stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I was treated with AC, Taxol, Carboplatin, Gemzar, and Xeloda. My cancer was chemo resistant halfway through treatment which led to both a lumpectomy and then a double mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction.
Cancer is basically a giant bummer. Cancer strips away so much and leaves you feeling incredibly vulnerable and unknown, even to those who love you most. This isn’t to say that cancer hasn’t opened my eyes and made me find happiness and humor in things I never thought possible. Cancer has made me aware of how truly amazing community is and how people truly and deeply care for one another. It has helped me develop a passion for advocacy and has helped me spread my story and work to make mental health care for survivors less taboo and more accessible.
I have hopes that this blog will be accessible to those who have cancer, cancer survivors, and their loved ones. If there’s something you want to know, please don’t hesitate to ask. This will be a learning experience for all of us and I am thankful you have decided to join me.
